Bedside Carafe

The fine inns of France would afford their guests with a carafe of red wine on the bed stand. A small tumbler would be placed atop the glass receptacle in order to discourage dust or gnats from contaminating the grape spirits that were intended to relax and induce sweet slumber. In later times, a coordinating bottle and glass were designed for this very purpose, though offering chilled water rather than wine.
