Pattern #PH408  1840 DAY DRESS AND HOW TO VIDEO SET

Do you find the idea of making a Victorian gown intimidating? This video will help relieve your fear about making this 1840 Day Dress. Mary Chancellor, a Wisconsin seamstress, explains each step of the pattern and suggests short  cuts for some of the more difficult sewing  procedures. This video was not produced by Patterns of History. 60 minutes.

This simple day dress has the narrow sleeves and "Marie Stuart" waist popular during the middle and late years of the decade. Cartridge pleating at the waist gives the skirt its soft rounded shape, which can be further accentuated by wearing gathered petticoats. Note: After this pattern was printed,  further research proved that this dress was made around 1845. This is one of the original 1976 patterns from Patterns of History. Please note that they have briefer instructions and fewer illustrations, but do include "Period Notes".
