Authentic nineteenth-century pattern. Step-by-step sewing instructions are illustrated with easy-to-follow drawings. The instruction guides describe historically-accurate sewing techniques, though modern alternatives are offered on some steps. The envelope lists appropriate fabrics, colors, and color combinations called from nineteenth-century fashion magazines. Modern fabric suggestion are also made. Information on the garment's fashion era, as well as suggestions about appropriate hair and hat styles, accessories, and under-clothing are made in the illustrated "Period Notes" that follow the instructions. Directions are also given for any required undergarments such as bustles or petticoats. Based on garments from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin' Costume Collection.  Patterns in this collection are from 1840-1899.

Patterns of History #PH401

This pattern has many of the typical features of an early 1870s dress including a tight-fitting, short-waisted bodice with peplum and coat sleeves, a bustled apron-style overskirt, and a skirt with straight front and full back. The original was made from bright blue silk faille and trimmed with dark blue velveteen and white satin. Package includes patterns for a bodice, skirt, and overskirt. This dress should be worn with the 1873 bustle pattern #PH402.

Patterns of History #PH402

This long, narrow bustle shape was used to define skirt lines during the 1870s. The “fishtail”-style bustle can be adjusted for the fuller silhouette of the early 1870s or the narrower silhouette of the decade’s later years. The bustle can be worn with the 1874 Bustled Dinner Gown
